The Ontario Provinical Police are reminding us in the Treaty 3 area that bears are coming out of hibernation and are more noticeable in backyards, residential areas, near dumpsters and dumping areas.

The OPP released in a statement: “Residents are encouraged to take steps to reduce attractants and prevent unwanted bear encounters. The following measures can help keep both the community and wildlife safe:”

  • Keep all doors and ground‑level windows closed and locked, especially during evening and overnight hours.
  • Store garbage securely and avoid placing bins outside if they contain food scraps.
  • Place garbage out only on collection day, not the night before.
  • Remove bird feeders during bear season, as seeds and suet attract wildlife.
  • Do not leave pet food outdoors.
  • Clean barbecues after each use to remove grease and food residue.
  • Pick ripe fruit from trees and remove fallen fruit from the ground.
  • Keep compost in a secure, bear‑resistant container.
  • Maintain a tidy yard free of food waste or strong food scents.

If you see a bear, remain calm, keep a safe distance and don’t approach the animal.

There is a bear wise reporting line available if you have concerns that aren’t requiring the immediate assistance of 911, you can call 1-866-514-2327.
