May 6th is when a flood occurred at the Kenora Hospital and now an official cause has been announced.
In a release by the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, a pipe in a fourth floor washroom is to blame which caused significant water damage as 25% of the hospital was affected.
Quick response from hospital staff minimized the extent of the damage as it could’ve been more severe.
With the flood cancelling all surgeries through the end of May, closing the Respiratory therapy clinic until further notice and several other factors in the aging building with this flood, conversations are now being held to discuss additional emergency support options. Mobile medical units are under evaulation with Ontario’s Emergency Medical Assistance Team as they have been in Kenora, and discussions are ongoing with the Canadian Armed Forces, with the City of Kenora also involved with support efforts.
The hospital is currently completing a full damage assessment but will take a few more months to complete. LWDH is also working with Ontario Health and the Ministry of Health to explore additional infrastructure expertise and identify preventative measures moving forward.
