Community Radio for the Wauzhushk Onigum Nation

About The Gap 101.3 CKWO

Radio Mandate

To preserve the culture and traditions of Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation and its community members.

Station Information

101.3 The Gap (CKWO-FM) is owned and operated by WON (Wauzhushk Onigum) Nation Radio Inc. We are a low-powered English and Ojibway language indigenous radio station broadcasting on a frequency modulated signal of 101.3 Megahertz. (101.3 FM).

We are licensed as a Type B – Indigenous (Native) radio station under the CRTC (Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications Commission) and we are community non-profit radio station serving Wauzhushk Onigum and its community members. We operate with a governance of 5 volunteer board of directors and currently 1 full time employee to serve band and community members by sharing information, embracing culture and bettering communication.

The community radio sector is heavily volunteer driven, but this gives opportunities for members of communities like ours to add their voice and influence on our programming in a minimal capacity while having fun! This adds a variety of spoken word, music and community programming to our station while giving you the control of having your own show, meeting new people and having a new hobby to share with all.

We are always looking for announcers and event staff when we are live on location (payment when at businesses) with announcers expected to have a maximum 60-minute radio show once a week where you can pick the contents, music or overall look of your radio show or be on location with us limited to 3 hours at a time.

We are also a member of the National Campus and Community Radio Association.

How did we get our name?

Our radio station was named after a narrow channel on lake of the woods that’s called Devils Gap. Our logo originates from the Devils Gap Rock that sits on the east side of Devils Gap on Wauzhushk Onigum Nation on beautiful Lake of the Woods. Back in the day, the rock originated from two brothers as a prank who painted it and over the years, the rock has stayed with the nation and boaters who travel through this channel to explore Lake of the Woods.

Where can you hear us?

We are a low-powered radio station with a signal power of 50 watts. What does this mean?

This means that our signal covers Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation as well as the towns/areas of Kenora, Norman and Keewatin. Our broadcast range extends to approximately as far South as Town Island on Lake of the Woods, West until about 5 kms before Clearwater Bay, North as far as the Dalles First Nation turn off and East before Reddens/Longbow Lake. Please refer to our signal map below for specifics (signal strength depends on variables of the listener including location, radio type, elevation etc.)

If you can’t get us on your FM dial, you can stream us live on our website. Click the Listen Live button at the top of the page now.

You can also stream us on Tune In Radio.

Our Staff Team

We have one full-time staff member (General Manager) operating the station and are governed by a board of directors, but a community station like ours relies on volunteer programmers.

Volunteer opportunities are available for you to share your voice and opinion on your favourite genres of music or on topics and interests that might relate to our audience.

Meet Jake

Jake has been in the radio industry for over a decade moving to Kenora in 2017, he quickly made his mark under the “Jake on the Lake” moniker with Acadia Broadcasting. After connecting with community members and listeners, dedicating his time and commitment to supporting communities around the area, and hosting dozens of events including Coney Island Music Fest, Festival of Trees, golf tournaments, music festivals and more, Jake took a brief hiatus from radio and even travelled around the country before returning to Radio in the Northwest Territories in 2023.

We were ecstatic when he came on board to help launch 101.3 The Gap in December of 2023.

Jake can’t do this alone; we are patiently waiting for funding to move forward with multiple projects with our station including growing our station’s employees. Stay tuned for more details in 2026, and if you’re interested in hosting your own radio show as a volunteer, there is always an opportunity for you to join us with minimal commitment and a chance to explore what you can do for others in your community with the power of radio.
