Can’t See the Forest for the Trees: Jennifer Caie
September 29 – December 24
Walk slowly. Pause. Observe.
Jennifer Caie, a Dryden, Ontario artist presents a walk in the wilderness. CAN’T SEE THE FOREST FOR THE TREES is a polyptych exhibition immersing the viewer in northern Ontario woodlands.
In the forest where Caie lives, one can see its history: old, charred trees from forest fires amongst new growth; echoes of clear-cut and reforestation practices; and grandmother trees giving rise to the new generation of plants that will renew this ecosystem.
Look at the earth crowded with growth, new and old bursting from their strong roots hidden in the silent, live ground, each seed according to its own kind…each one knowing what to do, each one demanding its own rights on the earth. – Emily Carr
Playing with scale and focus, Caie presents both large and small paintings, her work a visual spotlight, guiding the viewer’s gaze as they traverse the boreal forest through four seasons. Towering trees filtering sunlight through enlaced branches, mushrooms bursting from the undergrowth, the delicate grace of a lady slipper, or the quiet mist hushed over a boreal bog at twilight. Caie shares her vision, drawn to the ever-changing layers of light, textures, and colours that express the forests of northern Ontario.
